Recent media scrutiny has made our industry acutely aware that herbal products must truly deliver on the therapeutic promises of the ingredients. As many disappointed retail consumers know, the preservation and the quality of an herbal ingredient are of the utmost importance. However, preserving all the beneficial constituents of a fresh herb to produce a quality finished product is challenging.

Numerous studies have shown that freeze-drying offers vastly superior preservation of the active constituents found in fresh botanicals. In fact, a freeze-dried herb is so perfectly preserved that it is biochemically identical to its fresh counterpart—all the freeze-dried herb’s essential oils, pigments, phytonutrients, polysaccharides and enzymes remain intact. In essence, a freeze-dried herb is in suspended animation and will quickly reanimate when consumed.

Freeze-drying an herb consists of removing the ice crystals (water) from the herb, in a vacuum, after it is flash-frozen. This avoids the heat and/or evaporation that catalyze enzymatic and chemical reactions and destroy the therapeutic components in the herb. Freeze-drying also does not involve the use of alcohol, which many consumers find objectionable. By contrast, other drying and processing methods expose a fresh herb to high temperatures, oxygen, evaporation and moisture, which leads to the rapid degeneration and loss of the herb’s beneficial constituents.

All our Synergized^® Herbs are grown to our exacting specifications. They are not only certified organic, but also grown with a special nutrient-rich compost that is free of animal manure. This greatly reduces the risk of bacterial contamination so commonly found in many herbal ingredients. We control every aspect of the growing process, from seed selection to the harvest of each variety at its peak of potency, and each field and every herb are tracked from seeding to packaging with their specimen identification and lot numbers. We even have custom-designed devices to vacuum bugs from the plants!

Each Synergized^® Herb is harvested at its ideal stage of development, washed and flash-frozen within one hour of harvest to preserve all its potent potential. The herbs are then placed on sterilized stainless-steel trays and fresh freeze-dried within 36 hours. Synergized^® Herbs are next cold-milled into fine powders, samples of which are sent to a lab for both physical and microbial analysis. After milling, our herbs are placed in USDA-approved food-grade, virgin, heavy-mil, oxygen-barrier bags, with an oxygen absorber. Additionally, we use a UV coating on the outside of the bags to ensure that no damaging light can reach the herbs. Each bag is then hermetically sealed to create an oxygen- and moisture-free environment. All our finished freeze-dried herbs are stored in our temperature-controlled facility.
