Medicinal mushrooms have been treasured for 7,000 years as profound healing agents. Unlike many other traditional remedies, though, mushrooms have been shown in numerous modern scientific studies to possess medicinal properties. Seven mushrooms in particular have demonstrated remarkable health benefits: the Asian mushrooms Cordyceps sinensis (cordyceps), Hericium erinaceus (lion's mane), Coriolus versicolor (turkey tails), Ganoderma lucidum (reishi), Lentinula edodes (shiitake) and Grifola frondosa (maitake) and the Brazilian mushroom Agaricus blazei.

These seven special fungi contain an abundance of enzymes, polysaccharides and protein-bound polysaccharides, including the highly beneficial beta-D-glucans. Thus, they all possess significant immune-strengthening properties. Animal and human trials have found these mushrooms enhance the production of T-cells, helper T-cells, natural killer cells and macrophages. Additionally, research indicates that reishi encourages the production of tumor-necrosis factor. While medicinal mushrooms contain substantial quantities of beta glucans, recent research indicates that Agaricus blazei contains even higher levels than do other medicinal mushrooms.

Medicinal mushrooms also contain other valuable active constituents, such as sterols and triterpenes. Studies show that these important components may be responsible for mushrooms’ capacity to help lower elevated blood pressure and serum cholesterol levels as well as to moderate an inflammatory response. They also protect the liver and enhance its functioning. We are a long way from fully understanding all that mushrooms offer; however, the research continues, with very promising results.

The quality and potency of mushrooms can vary widely, depending upon a variety of factors. In nature, mushrooms are responsible for digesting and recycling organic debris—they actually consume the organic material on which they grow. As a result, they easily accumulate toxic metals and other contaminants. The substrate on which they grow is thus of particular importance. Our mycelia grow on a proprietary, certified organic, brown rice, millet or buckwheat substrate. Using this highly nutritive, pure substrate allows us to avoid the allergens present in commonly used substrates such as soy. Our Synergized^® Mushrooms are further protected from contamination because they grow in a pharmaceutical-grade clean room with HEPA air filtration.

The fruiting bodies of mushrooms can be difficult to digest and assimilate due to well-developed covalent bonds in their cell walls. Mushroom mycelia, however, have soft cell walls, rich in potent enzymes, making them ideal for therapeutic applications. Not only do the enzymes aid in digestion, but also recent research has suggested that mushroom mycelium enzymes may prevent oxidative stress and inhibit abnormal cell growth. Our mycelia are carefully monitored throughout their growth to ensure the complete development of all their active beneficial constituents. After harvest, we utilize a special cold-drying and precision cold-milling technique that protects heat-sensitive enzymes and breaks down the chitinous fibers in the soft cell walls of the mycelia to make them fully digestible in the body.
